Director's Statement
If you visit the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles you would be struck by the fact that the whole exhibit culminates in one simple fact: Yes, Nazis organized the mass murder of the Jewish people, but it was “ordinary people” who committed those atrocities.
Since my visit there, I’ve been fascinated by the fact that any ordinary person can be easily swayed to do bad things when pressed.
There are multiple experiments that demonstrate this can and has happened: Stanford Prison, The Milgram, and The Third Wave. They are all chilling examples of what humans are capable of when the situation allows them to be.
I wanted to write a story of cruelty not from the viewpoint of a victim or a villain, but of a bystander, an unwilling contributor. My goal was not to judge them but to feel them in their journey. My aim is to leave the audience with one simple question: There are always moral choices left, and none are easy; which do you choose?
